Climate Change: The Leadership Academy

Recognition is now widespread that local authorities have a key role in leading action to adapt and mitigate climate change within their areas. Delivering against this role however requires strong political leadership. In a fast moving policy landscape, opportunities for local authorities to show leadership are broad, but also present many challenges.
 
This course offers participants the opportunity to learn more about the latest developments, how the best local authorities are approaching climate change, and the benefits of strong political leadership. This programme has been developed to support local authorities on climate change. It is designed to expose participants to a mix of expert guest speakers, discussion, networking, dynamic learning methods and stimulating activities.
 
Who is it for?

• Elected members with portfolios relating to climate change including Environment and Planning, Transport, Regeneration, Housing, Corporate Strategy.

• Leaders and deputy leaders

• Opposition spokespersons

• Chairs of scrutiny panels.
 
Programme objectives

• Equip participants with a better understanding of what leadership on climate change looks like

• Enable participants to better develop and lead meaningful partnership working for climate change in their areas

• Outline how participants can engender a shared vision and engage the public to achieve meaningful behaviour change

• Outline recent developments on climate change policy and the opportunities and challenges for local authorities

• Provide an opportunity for participants to learn from each other and from the best practice in the local government sector

• Provide an outline of the opportunities for local authorities that local low carbon economies present and the tools and levers available to realise this.
