Organisational Redesign

06 April 2010

With declining resources and increasing demand, many councils are considering how to reduce costs while preserving key front-line services. The Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) has launched a new resource to support councils in undertaking organisational redesign. Based on practical experience and research, the resource sets out key issues for councillors and senior managers, good practice examples, and detailed advice for HR staff. Visit this resource to help your council achieve successful and sustainable change.

The new organisational redesign resource is now live on the IDeA website.  To access the resource, visit: www.idea.gov.uk/organisationalredesign

The resource consists of research and advice, as well as lessons from councils who have recently undertaken organisation redesign.  As a result of consultation across the LGA Group, and with HR professionals, RIEP Directors and elected members, the resource now features:

  • An introduction which positions organisation redesign as part of council's broader strategic planning processes
  • A new section called 'Key issues for Councillors', written by a Member Peer
  • Case study examples integrated into the main text
  • A section on partnerships which includes information about shared services and shared posts, strategic commissioning/outsourcing models, and Total Place.

New case studies, links and guidance materials will be added to the resource as it becomes available.
